GNU Chess
The GNU Project's chess program, at its own prompt.
▶ Play GNU Chess free, in your browser, nothing to install
GNU Chess is one of the oldest free chess programs: Stuart Cracraft started it in 1984 as part of the GNU Project, and it was rewritten several times. Version 6 plays with an engine based on Fabien Letouzey's Fruit 2.1, with PolyGlot between it and the GNU Chess command interface.
You play by typing moves such as e4, Nf3 or e2e4 at its prompt, and it shows the board as text, or with chess pieces in graphic mode. Commands set the depth and the clock, take moves back, give hints from the opening book, save and load games and positions, and let two people play at one keyboard in manual mode.
This is GNU Chess 6.3.0. Saved games are kept on the server, and two people can play each other online.
